Potentially, these are hours of getting proximate to people we would not otherwise have met. This is not a guarantee of being changed by an encounter (the rich man passed by, or maybe stepped over, the beggar Lazarus, hardening his own heart lest it be moved with pity and painful love and a nascent demand that justice be satisfied from his own means, very dangerous, like opening the door to what might have been Gandalf stopping by for tea) but it is a possibility, a scratch-off ticket in which the prize is metanoia.
As a proud Black Catholic, whose grandparents endured and helped end segregation in the Catholic school system in the south, this is wonderful to see. Thank you for being so generous with your spirit, especially during a spiritually demanding season. Btw, Sr. Aletheia, you were one of the very few religious that gave me courage and consolation during George Floyd's death and the aftermath. I actually found the screenshot of one of your responses on Instagram, in which you said "the reason the narrative on this issue is largely secular is because many religious people in this nation have dropped the ball." All this to say - a very deserved feature for those who have followed you for years.
Christina, what an incredible and inspiring legacy your family has. Thank you for sharing that. And thank you for your words of encouragement, I am grateful that my words were helpful to you in such a difficult time.
This is a critical lesson. We see heartless cruelty today as Federal policy, which more than half of US Catholics apparently support. Nothing will change inside or outside the Church without conversion of hearts.
God bless you, Sister! And your new order! May it flower and grow! I’ve said for years now that when we change hearts, I’m just laws will no longer matter! I’m so glad you went to the Selma event. You sisters are lights wherever you are!
Beautiful! I'm grateful to share the mission of changing hearts with you.
Amen. We are too Sara.
